Dawn Of The Dead 1978 Analysis
This image scene is from the 1978 Dawn Of The Dead. This shows Fran and Stephan's relationship falling apart, by the way Fran is sitting up the bed naked, and Stephan looking dull, staring into space, this would normally illustrate sex. On Fran's side of the bed it's very low key lighting, that could suggest that it's a bad thing to bring a baby into a world of flesh eating zombies. Also this shows Stephan (Flyboy), is not that man he looks, when we look at him we think he would be able to shoot well and protect Fran, but he's always rescued by Roger and Peter. Furthermore, the camera shot is a long shot, showing the distance between their relationship and the emotional side to both characters.
Laura Mulvey's "Gaze Theory" is very much challenged in this scene, as Fran has her breasts out and Stephan is looking the opposite way not speaking to her, this shows their relationship has gone downhill since we were first introduced to them.On the other hand, Fran is a early feminist, as she's tough throughout the context of the film, even with the breakdowns, and she's blonde which challenges the theory.
