Women In Black 2 Angel Of Death 2014 Film Trailer Analysis

Women In Black 2 Angel Of Death
                                                                                  2014
                                                                     Horror, Drama, Thriller
                                                                                 5.5/10

Women In Black is about a house called Eel Marsh House who is haunted after 40 years, and a group of children stay there after getting evacuated from WWII, but awakes the dark.

At fist we meet a woman and a man on the train talking about the Marsh House and how it has been abandoned for years. We then get a low angle shot of the house showing the audience how dark and terrifying the house looks, and then music starts off very eerie, (building up tension). By watching the trailer we could tell it looked like it was after WWII because of the dated costumes, and how the houses, trains and cars look (dated historical context). After the slow bits of the trailer we get glimpse of the house and toys playing by its self, while a heart beat is playing in the background, building up tension for the jump scare. On the other hand, I liked the fact they used a little boy to do a voice over talking about the woman in black, because it made the film seem more creepy.

The aspects of the trailer that I thought that didn't look good, or would put the audience off was that the trailer was too long before the action kicked off, and when they did a jump scare the suspense wasn't long enough to deliver. I also didn't think it deliverer horror enough, because it showed a little boy going missing and made it look more of  a mystery thriller.

Altogether, I thought the trailer was alright, but could of shown more of the women in black and made the trailer's pace more faster.

Fight Club 1999 Trailer Analysis

                                                             Fight Club
                                                                1999
                                               Psychological, Thriller, Drama
                                                                7/10

Fight Club is about a man who never sleeps working in an everyday office, waiting for his life to change. He ends up crossing paths with a soap maker and they form an underground fight club, that turns into something else.

At first of the trailer we hear the main character narrate his life, and what it holds, it then goes to a low angle when he is sitting in his chair at work, showing us that he's weak and powerless. We then see some sort of DNA and then meet the soup maker (Tyler). All the way though the trailer we see a lot of bandages, picking out clips of the film that will make the audience understand what genre the film is. The trailer shows a lot of the characters that is in the film, so we get a rough idea what they look like and who they are, with their rough looking clothes and blood on their faces. One of the aspects I like about the trailer is that it starts of quite slow, (slow paced edits) to show the start of the characters life. When the fight club is introduced we get faster paced edits to show the tension of the film, and to make the audience want to see the film to understand more. The music they play over the trailer fits very well, as the song is about losing your mind, it makes us, (the audience) think he's an insomniac, is he imagining it.

The aspects of the trailer I didn't like or wouldn't appeal to the audience is that it doesn't sell much of the plot, we understand that office worker has a boring life and wants to change it, and then he goes to the fight club, to me I don't think we get much detail from the character and why is he the way he is. He we the main character is not all there because we see he's imagining things. Furthermore, I think it's a little too long at first and goes on for a bit, until the drama hits. I also think it makes it look like an action/crime film with the explosions and them running away.

Altogether, I gave this trailer 7/10, even though this is one of my favourite films I think it's a little slow at first, and doesn't sell the story out too much, but I think it's a honest trailer.

Panic Room 2002 Film Trailer Analysis

                                                            Panic Room
                                                                 2002
                                                           Drama Thriller
                                                                  9/10

Panic Room is about a woman and her diabetic daughter moving into their new house which includes a panic room, but three burglars end up breaking in and searches for a missing fortune.

The aspects of the trailer I liked was that it starts of quite slow of the mum and daughter looking at their new home, this was a good way to introduce the film, to show the audience what it is about but not showing too much plot. The trailer then starts to build up after they find the panic room where music starts up, and the camera slowly pans around the room, giving the audience a idea of what the film is about. I love how when the mum goes into her daughters room to tuck her in, the trailer starts to speed up a lot, and the camera pans down the staircase and zooms into the door handles. After this the music starts to build up when the daughter locks herself in the panic room, while her mum is still in the house with the burglars. This is too keep the audience on the edge of their seat and giving them teasers if the mum will survive, with these three crazy burglars. On the other hand, the slow motion gives off a dramatic effect when the child and the mother is running to the panic room.

The aspects of this trailer that where not too successful to me was that it was a little too long, and they should show less to keep people waiting till the movie hits the Cinemas. I also thought they showed less of the burglars, but then again it builds up tension.

Altogether, I loved the trailer just as much as the movie. I think the trailer sells of the film and gives a genuine reflection of the film. The trailer also plays on the audiences head to make them think what would happen if that was them.

30 Days Of Night 2007 Trailer Analysis

                                                                 30 Days Of Night
                                                                          2007
                                                                 Vampire, Horror
                                                                         8.5/10

The film is about a Alaskan town that is in darkness for a month, and is attacked by vampires.

At the beginning of the trailer there is a jump scare which captures the attention of the audience to make them want to watch more. After the jump scare it is followed up with collision cuts after one after another, making it more tense. This is a great way to keep the audience engaged. During the trailer we get a number of inter titles in a perfect front that is to do with the film (vampires), telling us some of the plot, which is animated well showing dripping blood and it's very gritty like the film. The trailer is very fast paced and towards the end the screen goes red, indicating there's a lot of danger and blood. Furthermore the music fits perfectly with the pace of the trailer, giving the audience a thrill and keeping them on the edge of their seat wanting to see more.

The aspects of the trailer that I thought was unsuccessful, was that there was too many fade out and too many clips which the audience might find it hard to keep up with. I also thought they didn't show much gore which the film manly has loads of it in. On the other hand, I like the that we don't see much of the vampires, so it makes us want to see the actual film to find out more. I think the target audience for this film will be between the ages of 18-24, because it's something that would appeal to a lot of teenage students.

Day Of The Dead 1985 Trailer Analysis

                                                         Day Of The Dead
                                                                  1985
                                                                 Horror
                                                                  3/10

Day Of The Dead is about a group of military officers and scientists in an underground bunker, while the world is being taken over by slow moving monsters (zombies).

In Day Of The Dead trailer from 1985, it shows parts of the film, some of it which is not included in the film. The trailer contains a voice over that tells us some of the plot, and we see a zombie called 'Bub' a few times which is one of the main characters.

The aspects of the trailer was not successful and was a put of to the audience is that the trailer looked more like a comedy then anything. At the end we see people in the cinema slowly turning around and looking at 'Bub' in shock, while he is eating popcorn. This to me did not sell the film out and made it look like a action comedy, then serious, as we didn't see no gore or there was no scary factor what's so ever. The trailer wasn't very fast like the film and the pacing was quite bad which doesn't pull the audience in, or build up tension.

Overall, I was quite shocked with the trailer, I like the film but it showed a lot of false advertising, which would make some of the audience be put off. Furthermore, it didn't tell us the plot of the film.

Pusher 2005 Trailer Analysis

                                                                 Pusher 3
                                                                   2005
                                              Genre: Crime, Drama, Horror, Thriller
                                                                   8/10

Pusher is about a drug dealer called Milo (who was in the last two movies), who is aging and planning his daughter's 25th birthday, but a shipment carries out 10.000 of ecstasy instead of heroin and Milo has to sell them before everything breaks loose.

The Pusher Trilogy trailer shows the advents that happened in the last two films, showing the audience what the films are about, (sex, drugs, violence, guns, a lot of gore and cars). The trailer to me shows the gritty reality in some parts of the world.

The positive aspects of the trailer was that it was very faced paced, it kept the audience interested and gave out some of the story.  There are also a lot of inter titles during the trailer from different companies reviews about the film to make more people watch it, and to promote the film more.  The trailer shows a lot of drug dealing going, and some horrendous crime which delivers the film. The music they use slowly builds up with the action to do with the film.

The aspects of the trailer I didn't find successful, and would put off it's target audience would be that not enough plot of the film and that there was too many inter titles. This would put the audience off because they would want to know what the film is actually about. On the other hand, from watching the trailer I can see a lot of subtitles which would put some people off from reading them, as they might miss apart of the film. Also watching this trailer they have used some of the same clips twice which would make the film look 'lazy' and not trying hard enough. Furthermore, I thought some of the montage clips was too fast to look at, and I thought I was missing out key parts of the film.

The score I gave this film trailer was 8/10, because I liked how it started off slow and built up with quick montage clips. I also think that it shows the genuine reflection of the film, but I also think that they show very little of it (the plot). Altogether, the target audience would mainly be for males, as there's no scare factor and more action, I also think it shows off too much strippers and makes the film look sleezey which could put off female target audience.

Dawn Of The Dead 2004 Scene Analysis

In this scene is where they have just got into the lift to escape from the fast moving monsters in the bottom floor of the mall. This is a medium shot from where the doors are, this shot creates the sense of being claustrophobic because the lift is so packed, but also panic because there is no way out as the zombies are everywhere. Zombies in modern films are a lot more faster and scarier then the original Dawn Of The Dead, because audiences have gotten a lot more stronger over the years because we see a lot of horror on the news. While they're panicking in the lift contrapuntal music is being played from the lift, this is ironic because lifts play calm music because because you're suppose to enjoy your day out shopping. Furthermore, Ana is in the center wearing clothes that cover her, showing that she is the final girl that doesn't care about fashion. Also she has blonde hair that challenges stereotypes, whereas most blonde girls in horrors are the victims.

Dawn Of The Dead 2004 Scene Analysis

This is one of the first scenes in the opening credits of Dawn Of The Dead 2007, where they use a load of montage clips of the disease spreading, panic and destruction, showing the effects of the country. The beginning of the clip shows the infected people with blood running from their mouths,  this is very quick montage scenes introducing the film with blood red writing (Dawn Of The Dead). It then shows the government saying they don't know what is causing the disease while music in the background starts to play, Johnny Cash, The Man Comes Around. This song is very powerful to the scene because it's about Judgement Day when the world will fall apart, and "When there's no room in hell, and when the dead will walk the Earth". He wrote the song before his death and it has a number of bible references in the song. I think this scene is so powerful, because the right song was played, it may seem calm but however, it raises goosebumps of the audience because it relates to terrorism. Three years before this film 9/11 happened, and it was a wake up call to America, it was the most devastating thing that had happened, and this creates tension and a real scare to the audience.

Dawn Of The Dead 2004 Scene Analysis

This scene is where Ana and the rest of the survives are about to get off to the island, where they are hoping to live their life in peace. The flag next to Ana is the American flag which represents freedom and patriotism, we see this a lot during the film where the flag is either next to her or Kenneth, which shows their good American-ness. Furthermore, back in the 1970's horrors where often based on real life advents, like DOTD (1979) Vietnam War and this remake, terrorism. On the other hand, Ana in this scene is the final girl, who is blonde which challenges character stereotypes. Ana is also a nurse so she can handle any body horror, and can help if anyone's injured, (being a female hero but in a modern context). Throughout the film her costume that she wears is either baggy trousers, jeans or tank tops which shows she doesn't care what she looks like, and she is a lot more tougher then Fran in the original Dawn Of The Dead by  George A. Romero.

Dawn Of The Dead 1978 Analysis

This image scene is from the 1978 Dawn Of The Dead. This shows Fran and Stephan's relationship falling apart, by the way Fran is sitting up the bed naked, and Stephan looking dull, staring into space, this would normally illustrate sex. On Fran's side of the bed it's very low key lighting, that could suggest that it's a bad thing to bring a baby into a world of flesh eating zombies. Also this shows Stephan (Flyboy), is not that man he looks, when we look at him we think he would be able to shoot well and protect Fran, but he's always rescued by Roger and Peter. Furthermore, the camera shot is a long shot, showing the distance between their relationship and the emotional side to both characters.

Laura Mulvey's "Gaze Theory" is very much challenged in this scene, as Fran has her breasts out and Stephan is looking the opposite way not speaking to her, this shows their relationship has gone downhill since we were first introduced to them.On the other hand, Fran is a early feminist, as she's tough throughout the context of the film, even with the breakdowns, and she's blonde which challenges the theory.

Christine Horror Poster Analyse

Christine was made in 1983 in USA, it’s a Stephen King film that was made into a book first and directed by John Carpenter. The plot of the film is about a nerdish boy who boys a strange broken, rusty car, that turns the car into a stylish 1958 Plymouth Fury but is possessed by an evil spirit and has a mind of its own.  The box office made £21,200,000, by manly teens watching the horror flick.

The front cover is mainly all black and in the middle it has the main character the car, Christine who has its lights on and a blue missed around it which shows it’s evil, and different to most cars. Furthermore, the black makes the car stand out and the blue gives it a ghost powerful look to it. This relates to the target audience because of the car, most teens go racing in their friends/boyfriends car which in the 70’/80’s “made them popular”.

The writing all around the poster is all white which makes it ghostly, and the selling line “How do you kill something that can’t possibly be alive?” this title shows the audience first time seeing this poster, it’s not the person in the car that’s a killer, it’s the actual car that unstoppable. On the other hand, the front of Christine is a dark red with a white boarder around ti, which makes it very clear and recognizable film front. The writing its curvy and stylish, because it’s to do with this car that was mysteriously abandoned and turned back to its original self.

Insidious Poster Analysis

Insidious was released in 2010, and their box office made £53,991,137. The plot is about a family looks to prevent evil spirits from their house at first, but turning out to be their comatose child in a realm called The Further.

In the front cover is the main character, the little boy who is in a coma but he’s really trapped. In the photo his eyes are wide open as if he’s processed, his facial expression shows he’s not himself at all. In his eyes there is white writing saying “insidious is” probably meaning him, the spirits are taken over.

Furthermore, the house in the background is the last house they moved to, which the selling line “It’s not the house that’s haunted”. The houses play a huge part in the film because things start happening and they keep thinking it’s haunted, but in the last house they noticed it’s the boy.

The front has clear bright red writing that suggests danger and evil, which goes with the actual front because it’s tall, and the ending is sharp (a typical horror front but different). The front also looks very intense.

I think the target audience for this film is young adults because it’s the directors from Saw (James Wan), which his films are very jumpy and tense.

Lost Boys Film Poster Analysis

The Lost Boys is a comedy horror, released in 1987 July the 31st. It made £32,222,567 in USA. It’s Warner Brother’s film directed by Joel Schumacher. It’s about when two brother move into a new town and they’re convinced that there are vampires.

The main image is the group/gang of vampires and the female, Star; the boy in the left corner is Michael one of the brothers who moves there, which the story is mainly about him. A lot of the image is dominated by the group of vampires in the background behind Michael; this could show there will be trouble. The female (Star) she’s young and attractive who plays an important role in the film, as we can she’s leaning on David the head vampire which shows they have a connection with each other. Furthermore, the cover is red (very clear to the audience what the film is about, as red is to do with danger and blood). Also the characters have a vintage effect like a light pastel grey and yellow, which make the colours on their face look young and soft, showing vampires don’t age, and the colours red and a hint of yellow gives us a subconscious it’s about vampires.

The selling/tag line “Sleep all day, Party at night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire”. It’s short, simple and catchy; it’s easy for the audience to tell what the film is about. Furthermore, the selling line is fun and comes across to me a late teenager’s film. The title of the film front shows a good understanding of basic colours and very simple but striking.

Dawn Of The Dead Image Analysis

In this particular image we have a long shot that’s tilted up; this represents the zombies being weak and mindless as they look small from where the angle is being filmed. We also can see their arms are parted away and they’re walking very slowly, this shows they’re quite incoherent because they’re lost souls. Furthermore, behind the red clock it is very well lit to focus on the main subject matter (the clock), because the clock’s time is 4:35am showing its dawn and there is the living dead on the bottom floor (Dawn Of The Dead). The clock is also red to symbolize danger of the flesh eating slow monsters.

Altogether this film make look less scary to us now, as we see a lot worse on the news with people getting murdered, war and crime and there’s really no censorship, so we are getting tougher over the years, like Janet Staiger’s theory  about how audiences respond to films. When this was shown in 1978 the audience would have been shocked and terrified because of the zombie children getting shot (people killing in schools), the Vietnam War had just finished, and the body horror in the film, the director puts hidden messages in.
